On Thursday, February 27th, Pittsburg High School and the Pittsburg Unified School District (PUSD) invite fellow community school practitioners to come in for a site visit to learn from Pittsburg’s community school journey.
You’ll talk with PUSD (and like-minded peers) about community school development in high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools–how the work differs, and what’s the same. PUSD teams will share the work they’ve done around the necessary district infrastructures and supports, sustainability, and initiative alignment and coherence – and how each of these aspects of community school development supports school teams.
And the experiential learning doesn’t stop there! The site visit will take place in person at Pittsburg High School, so you can actually see PUSD’s community school work in action.
Whether you are new to community schools, or not, join the Pittsburg Unified School District and the Community Schools Learning Exchange (CSLX) at Pittsburg High School for a day of shared learning, discussion, and reflection.
Learning objectives:
Gain a better understanding of how one district has operationalized the Community Schools Forward framework through a Who, What, Why, and How orientation;
Learn practical strategies for addressing some of the challenges around integrating the community school strategy with other district-wide efforts, including new ideas for de-siloing people, teams and initiatives;
Hear how PUSD intentionally engages educational partners as part of a collective commitment to continuous learning and improvement and shared power and voice;
Engage in candid conversations with peers about community school development work, including triumphs and challenges; and,
Receive specific, actionable and concrete next steps to help you work toward your goals and further enhance your community school development.
Why PUSD? Pittsburg Unified School District has been working on community school development for several years. Their efforts predate the California Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP), yet they have used CCSPP grants to build on their existing foundation in integrated, strategic ways. The district team focuses on continuous learning and improvement, underscoring the developmental nature of community school work and the importance of focusing on steady progress towards goals. They’ve learned valuable lessons about the role districts play in supporting site-based community school development–and they know a thing or two about doing community school work at all levels of schooling.
The Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE) is proud to support this effort, working alongside PUSD to provide guidance, collaboration, and resources to strengthen the impact of community schools across the region. Through this partnership, CCCOE is helping to amplify best practices and foster opportunities for shared learning within the broader community schools network.
